Program Highlights:
The Biology–CSTEP Program at Kingsborough Community College is designed to 1) increase historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged undergraduate student awareness of the biological sciences as career options and 2) to increase the numbers of these students who complete preprofessional or professional education programs of study that lead to licensure in CSTEP-targeted professions. To accomplish these goals, the Biology-CSTEP program have implemented a series of comprehensive strategies and activities which include: a ) A CSTEP Program to develop in new students the test taking, time management, and study skills necessary for a successful transition into college; b) Seminars and field trips to expose students to the various career opportunities in the biological and health related sciences; c) A series of workshops and special research-intensive courses to provide students with the skills to conduct research and give research presentations at scientific conferences ;d) meaningful research projects that will result in research presentations and authorships in journal publications; e) instructional support in “gateway” courses (i.e., small group tutorials or supplemental courses in biology, chemistry and physics; f) Enhanced academic tracking and career mentoring to assure student success and enable them to make a smooth transition into upper four year colleges and professional programs;. g) Opportunities to attend professional meetings to present their research findings, and, h) provide students with quality information about college scholarships as well as research and internship opportunities.
