Program Highlights: The goal of the Kingsborough Community College Science Technology Entry Program (KBCC STEP) is primarily enrichment in experience of science, the scientific method, and hands-on research to 9th and 10th grade students from underequipped High Schools. KBCC STEP focuses on the formative Freshman and Sophomore years, when students often do not have access to a research class, and this year celebrates 10 years of students doing research both as in-program exercises, and following their own curiosities. They also consistantly master presentations of their work as posters, and to faculty, judges and their peers. Activities include biology, chemistry, & physics, and consistantly incorporate mathematical skills. Students present at the STEP conference in Albany, at the STEP Student Research Conference here at Kingsborough, and at Brooklyn College Science Day. Comments from judges have praised student knowledge of the content, and “ownership” of their projects, and we have won one or more trophies per year for the last 8 years. We also regularly expand student horizons through field trips. Overall, we provide fun and exciting supplements to the students’ science education. We are proud to have increased scientific knowledge, research experiences, presentations skills, mathematics, and good citizenship in our students.
